Making Books Part of a Healthy Childhood.

ROR LogoReach Out and Read Texas prepares our state’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.

Medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children.  Reach Out and Read targets families with children between the ages of six months and five years, with a special focus on those growing up in poverty.

PeekabooThe Problem

One-Third of Children Enter School Unprepared to Learn

34% of American children entering kindergarten today lack the basic language skills they will need to learn to read. And children living in poverty are especially at risk. Children who start out with reading difficulties are more likely to remain poor readers and ultimately fail in school.

A Prescription to Succeed in School.
