Reach Out and Read directly addresses the root cause of illiteracy by prescribing reading with children and giving parents the tools they need—brand new, developmentally appropriate children’s books.
Reading aloud to young children is one of the most effective activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills, build motivation, memory, and curiosity. Parents are able to build nurturing relationships around shared reading with their children by replicating the positive behaviors modeled by pediatricians in the exam room and volunteer readers in the waiting room.
Fourteen independent, peer-reviewed research studies show that the Reach Out and Read model has a direct impact on child development and parental engagement:
- Parents served by Reach Out and Read are up to four times more likely to read aloud to their children.
- Children served by Reach Out and Read show significant developmental gains in language and a six-month developmental edge over their peers in the preschool years.
- Children served by Reach Out and Read also score higher on vocabulary tests and school readiness assessments.
